How Hackers Stole $45 Million in Two Days

It was a bank heist for the digital era: No masks, no weapons, no standoffs with police — just a few keyboards and an elaborate hacking plan. In two sprightly operations, on December 12, 2012, and February 19, 2013, an international team of hackers and thieves stole a collective $45 million from more than 5,000 ATMs across the world. Eight suspects were charged in connection with the crimes on May 9 — still, the complex operation is one that should be understood, if only to better prevent future attacks. This infographic, from fraud detection and prevention firm 41st Parameter, highlights the team’s process — from raising the limits on prepaid debit accounts in banks in Oman to siphoning cash from machines in 27 countries — in colorful detail. New York Rangers vs. Boston Bruins Game 5: Live Score, Updates and Analysis

Game 5 between the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers is about an hour away, and the Blueshirts will be looking to stave of elimination for the second game in a row. Game 4 required several gutsy comebacks and overtime, but New York managed to avoid the sweep. Now, the Rangers will try to take one more step towards history.Only three teams have returned from a 3-0 hole. Most recently, the Philadelphia Flyers turned the trick on these same Bruins in 2010. That series isn’t a factor in this one, however, and the B’s will likely come out flying on home ice.Tuukka Rask will look to rebound from a so-so effort in Game 4 that saw him give up two fluky goals. Games like that rarely come in pairs, though, and the Rangers will likely have to find more conventional ways to score goals.Puck drop is set for 5:30 p.m. …

The idea was that users could share quick updates with their followers or frequent contacts from within the inbox. …

'The Hangover Theory'

Robert Waldmann's comments on the response to Michael Kinsley remind me of this old article from Paul Krugman (I've posted this before, but it seems like a good time to post it again — it was written in 1998 and it foreshadows/debunks many of the bad arguments used to justify austerity, etc.): The Hangover Theory: A few weeks ago, a journalist devoted a substantial part of a profile of yours truly to my failure to pay due attention to the "Austrian theory" of the business cycle–a theory that I regard as being about as worthy of serious study as the phlogiston theory of fire. Oh well. But the incident set me thinking–not so much about that particular theory as about the general worldview behind it. Call it the overinvestment theory of recessions, or "liquidationism," or just call it the "hangover theory." It is the idea that slumps are the price we pay for booms, that the suffering the economy experiences during a recession is a necessary punishment for the excesses of the previous expansion. The hangover theory is perversely seductive–not because it offers an easy way out, but because it doesn't. …

Gmail Overhaul Might Be On the Way

Despite rolling out a major overhaul a little over a year ago, Google could be preparing to redesign the Gmail experience on iOS, Android and the desktop. Reports of a new look for the Android client came from the eagle-eyes at Android Police — who noticed the new addition of a navigation drawer UI element in a Google I/O session on Android design patterns. That change mimics the design of Gmail for iOS and of Sparrow — the Gmail-centric mail client that Google acquired last year. While an update or overhaul of Gmail for Android makes sense — and might even be expected — The Next Web is reporting that a larger visual overhaul is also headed for the desktop and iOS. 2013 Detroit Red Wings Thriving as Playoff Underdogs

So this is how the other half lives, when it comes to playoff hockey. This is what it’s like to be a low seed, prohibitive underdog. This is what it’s like to have a goalie as hot as a firecracker, turning into Mr. Zero against a high-powered offense. This is what it’s like to see the players on the other team frustrated, angry and telling themselves that the breaks will eventually go their way. …
