Klobuchar promises hearing on American, US Airways merger

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., vows to hold a hearing to thoroughly review the recently proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways, Reuters reports. Klobuchar chairs a Senate subcommittee that considers antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights.

The two major U.S. carriers announced the $11 billion deal Wednesday that would create the world’s biggest airline, the Associated Press reports.

A date for the hearing has yet to be scheduled.

“During my time in the Senate I have worked hard to keep the airline industry competitive to make sure companies retain jobs, maintain service levels and keep prices low for travelers,” Klobuchar said in a statement.

Minnesota went through its own merger when Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines bought Northwest Airlines in 2008.
