SUV breaks through ice on Lake Minnetonka; baby passenger in critical condition

A baby inside an SUV that went through the ice on Lake Minnetonka Friday is hospitalized in critical condition, the Star Tribune reports

The vehicle reportedly fell through the ice under the Halsted Bay Bridge on the western side of the lake about 5:10 p.m. Emergency crews rescued the people from the vehicle, which was completely submerged.

The Pioneer Press reports that the parties in the SUV were identified as a family of four: a man, a woman, a 2-year-old girl and a 9-month-old baby girl.

The baby was strapped in a car seat and fully submerged, the Pioneer Press says.

All four were initially hospitalized at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. The baby was eventually airlifted to Children’s Hospital, while the other three family members reportedly remained in Waconia in good condition.

According to the Lake Minnetonka Patch, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office told the public last week that a thin ice advisory was in effect for all bodies of water in the county.

A witness talked with KARE-TV about Friday’s incident. See the video below.
