Family settles with CNN over 'Vodka Mom' remark

Relatives of a Cottage Grove mother who killed herself after being ridiculed by CNN host Nancy Grace as “vodka mom” reached an out-of-court settlement with the network in connection with her death, the Pioneer Press reported.

The terms of the deal between the family of Toni Medrano and CNN Worldwide, parent company of the show “Nancy Grace,” will not be disclosed and both sides are bound by a non-disclosure clause, said the family’s lawyer Mike Padden, the newspaper reported.

A lawsuit was never formally filed in the case and “we resolved the case just by negotiation,” Padden told the Star Tribune.

Medrano received national attention in November 2011 after it was alleged she was responsible for the death of her 3-week-old son.

Medrano admitted to investigators that she drank vodka before falling asleep on a couch next to her baby. The next morning, police received a call that the child was dead. An autopsy indicated he was smothered.

Grace called Medrano the “vodka mom” on a show that aired last summer, and Medrano set herself on fire a few weeks later. She died a few days after that.
