Man suspected of sex-while-driving sentenced to 4 years in fatal crash

After a highly emotional court hearing, a judge on Monday sentenced a man accused of killing two in a collision last year to four years in prison, the Mankato Free Press reports.

Mark Chalin, 24, is accused of driving recklessly prior to a head-on collision on Blue Earth County Road 90 with a car driven by 35-year-old Jonna Martin of Lakefield, who was killed.

Also killed was a passenger in Chalin’s car, Amber Menezes, 23, Chalin’s girlfriend. Witnesses said she was on his lap and it appeared as though they were having sex prior to the crash.

Chalin sobbed and begged a judge to keep him out of prison, the Free Press reported. Passionate pleas were made on both sides in the case, the newspaper says. Chris Menezes, who was married to Amber but separated from her at the time of the crash, urged the judge to give Chalin a long sentence. Menezes’ mother fell to the floor at one point and cried, “Nobody wins,” the newspaper reported.
