Massive wolf trapped in Otter Tail County

Bruce Hanstad, a longtime trapper, caught a 95-pound Timberwolf that is 5.5 feet long – the biggest he has ever seen, the Wadena Pioneer Journal reports. That’s near the upper weight range for adult males, the DNR says. Hanstad says he trapped the dark gray wolf northeast of Perham.

This is the first year Minnesota has allowed wolves to be hunted and trapped, after the animal was taken off federal endangered species lists in January. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued 6,000 permits for 400 animals. Hunters killed 147 wolves in an early phase of the wolf hunting season, and they have harvested another 95 in the current, late season, which runs through the end of January.

Animal activists have protested the hunt.
