Berlin the polar bear recovering after surgery

Berlin, the Lake Superior Zoo’s polar bear currently residing at Como Zoo, is recovering after surgery this weekend.

The Duluth News Tribune reports the polar bear had been acting lethargic and vomiting before exploratory surgery at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center was performed on Saturday.

Veterinarians found a necrotic mass–tissue that has been killed by disease or trauma–and signs of previous abdominal bleeding, the newspaper reports.

Berlin was moved to the Como Zoo after major flooding in the Duluth area in June.
