CDC: Fatal brain infection killed Forest Lake boy

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed an amoeba infection caused 9-year-old Jack Ariola Erenberg to contract a rare form of meningitis, the Associated Press reports.

The rare, lethal and incurable brain infection is caused by a microorganism found in the water.

Health officials say the boy recently swam in Lily Lake in Stillwater — which remains closed.

Jack was taken off life-support and died earlier this month.

This is the second known case in Minnesota — both are linked to Lily Lake in Stillwater. Seven-year-old Annie Bahneman, of Stillwater, died in 2010.
