Lynx star Augustus discusses sexuality, marriage plans

Minnesota Lynx star Seimone Augustus, who is also playing in the Olympics, discusses her sexuality and upcoming marriage to partner LaTaya Varner in an interview (below) with ESPN’s “Outside the Lines”.

The two are looking forward to a May wedding at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, despite the fact that gay marriage is not legal in the state.

Augustus announced she was gay earlier this year in an interview with The Advocate.

The 28-year-old Baton Rouge, La., native tells ESPN the story of how she came out to her mother.

And she talks about the difficulty of being gay in the South: “I’m 28 years old and I still have yet to see a gay or lesbian couple walk down the street and be openly gay in the South, at least where I’m from. We’re still getting over black and white issues down South so to think that they’re ready to accept open gay and lesbian people would be a bit of stretch.”
