C) The Split Rock Lighthouse was built in response to a 1905 storm that sank 26 ships on Lake Superior. The station closed in 1969 when modern navigational equipment made it obsolete. In 1971, the State of Minnesota obtained the scenic landmark, with administrative responsibility eventually given to the Minnesota Historical Society.
