AFL-CIO leader vows support, pledges aid for Crystal Sugar workers

President of AFL-CIO Richard Trumka promises to send $25,000 to the 1,300 union members as the labor movement escalates its campaign to end the nearly year-long lockout, the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead reports. Trumka said “nothing is off the table.”

Workers have rejected American Crystal Sugar’s contract proposal three times — most recently in June — citing issues with seniority  and job security.

The Moorhead-based company is the largest U.S. producer of beet sugar. It is operating with temporary replacement workers.
