A Two Harbors couple, Kirk and Beth Schield, have had a foster child care license since 2010. But the Minnesota Department of Human Services notified them in a July 6 letter that they had lost the license after Beth Schield spanked a child, the Duluth News Tribune reports.
The Minnesota Supreme Court in a 2008 ruling said spanking is legal unless the punishment is excessive.
CityPages notes that a 2005 poll of Minnesotans found that a majority think it is OK to spank a child as part of discipline.
