Olympic rower was college couch potato

U.S. Olympic team member Megan Kalmoe climbed into a boat at age 19 and rowed away from a sedentary lifestyle, all the way to the 2008 Olympic Games, the Pioneer Press reports. She’d lost 40 pounds, then added 10 – all muscle.

The Minneapolis-born athlete finished fifth in Beijing in a double sculls boat. Now she’s headed to London for the 2012 Games as part of the quadruple sculls squad.

Kalmoe has been blogging extensively about the adventure that is the pursuit of an Olympic medal. Her sister Molly was captain of the Minnesota Gophers rowing squad last year.

Kalmoe is among the 2012 USA women’s rowers featured in this video, along with their favorite songs.

Here she shares a video in which she and fellow teammates visit New York City, and she “races” Olympic speed skater Joey Cheek on rowing machines.
