Roger Church told the Winona Daily News he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and live to be at least a century-old. Roger is on his way to that milestone. He will celebrate his 90th birthday on Wednesday. He has spent most of his life in southeast Minnesota, where he was the postmaster in Minnesota City for 30 years. Roger’s father, George, also held the same position for 40 years.

February 4, 2012City of Minneapolis paying millions for unused Wi-Fi services
Six years ago, leaders in Minneapolis decided to spend more than $1 million each year to expand wireless internet for various services. But the Star Tribune reports Minneapolis only used 11 percent of the bandwidth it paid for last year. Usage is expected to increase as the city continues to install Wi-Fi in squad cars and a variety of new wireless cameras.

Clarence Opheim will be freed to a Minneapolis halfway-house after 19 years in the sex-offender program. The Star Tribune reports the 64-year-old is the first patient to be released since the program started in 1994. Opheim was convicted in the late 1980s of criminal sexual assault of a teenage boy. His whereabouts will still be monitored with an electronic ankle-bracelet.

Lawyers in a wrongful-death lawsuit against Amy Senser met on Friday to discuss whether a limited evidence-gathering process could continue. A judge had halted the evidence-gathering process in the civil case last year while Senser faces criminal charges. A lawyer involved said the discussion was confidential and did not say whether the judge had made a decision.

Minnetonka’s Michael Foods is recalling hard-boiled eggs distributed to 34 states over possible contamination by Listeria bacteria. Minnesota is among the states where the eggs are sold. The product comes from the company’s Wakefield, Neb. plant. No illnesses are reported.

The family of paralyzed Benilde St. Margaret’s hockey player Jack Jablonksi reports that the teen has sat up and is able to feed himself with help from a therapist. The family said on his Caringbridge page that there were “ups and downs” this week, however, they are incredibly proud of Jack’s determination and positive attitude during therapy.

February 3, 2012Authorities seize 146 animals from couple in Bigfork
A man and woman are each facing 34 counts of animal cruelty and mistreatment after police removed dogs, horses, chickens, a goat, rabbits and pheasants from their property in Bigfork Township. Police reportedly found dead deer carcasses, and dogs and horses tied to the ground without adequate shelter or water.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services reports 97.6 percent of retailers checked selling tobacco products are following underage tobacco laws. In order to receive federal funding for prevention and treatment efforts, Minnesota is required to have a least an 80 percent compliance rate. During the 12-month survey, law enforcement agencies issued about 600 citations to store owners.
